My Nana

Hi. I'm new to this site, and I don't know whether anyone can answer my question.

My Nana has Alzheimer's and she has been diagnosed with it since I was about 8 or 9. I'm 15 now, but she can't speak, she doesn't recognize anyone, and she cries a lot. She's lost a ton of weight, and my older cousins told me she is in her final stages. She lives very far away from me, and in a nursing home, so I haven't seen her and won't be able to for quite a while.

I was just wondering if anyone knows how long the final stage lasts? She has previous health problems, and she really doesn't seem to be doing very well. I want to help, but living in a different country, I can't be there to support her or visit her. My little brother and my little cousins have grown up without understanding what she was like, and I just don't know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions?

AFA Teens would like to share one teen's message of how he wants to make a difference in his community. He recently wrote to AFA to ask how he can spread AFA's mission and raise Alzheimer's Awareness. Read On...

"My name is Reed, and I am an eighth grade student at Autrey Mill Middle School, located in Johns Creek, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta). As part of our IMPACT project (Inspiring My Peers and Changing Tomorrow), I have been asked to choose an organization to support, and through research, inform my peers about what the organization does to make a difference in the world.

I have proudly chosen the Alzheimers Foundation of America because you can make a difference in our lives. Every year, hundreds of our elders are affected by this horrid disease. Furthermore, Alzheimers disease could be in our own future. It is important to find a cure for this disease, so our own grandparents, parents and even our children will not have to suffer as previous generations have. With your help, I can inspire my peers and make an impact on the community."

My grandfather just passed away from alzheimers and I was hoping someone would know a good way to cope with his death. I loved my grandfather very much and I miss him a lot. I also want to know a good way to honor his death by raising money for research but I don't know where. Thank you please reply

HI is anyone planning on going to Public Policy this year. IF not, look into it. My sister and i have gone the past two years and i think we really could get attention if they see kids are being affected. PLEASE talk to your parents about going. LETS FIGHT THIS FIGHT TOGETHER!!!! Thanx.

My grandma has ahlzigmers. It has been ten years now since she has been normal. I really dont remember her when she was normal. I am 13 i was three whan she got it.i go to see her every week in the nursing home. REPLIE

hi, I am new to this site, but I lost my great-grandma to this disease, when I was ten, and now I am sixteen. If anybody ever wants to talk, just please know that I am here. I feel that someone may need someone may need someone to talk to or just someone to listen to them, well I am here, whenever anyone ever needs to talk.

My nanny is going fast and I dont know wut to do. Some days she is ok and others she wakes up in a whole different world and just walks around wondering what to do. she gets mad sometimes and gets really sassy and snappy with people over nothing. I dont Papa passed away a year ago and it has just gone down hill from there. I dont know what to do sometimes. Im in college and go home on some weekends to visit my parents and brothers and sister and nanny lives with us. I dont know sometimes.

My great-grandmoter died last Wednesday. I would have posted this sooner but they (AFA) had to approvel my account. Anyway, for the last week it has been hard for me because I can't see her like I used to. It was hard but know I need to let my body know that I need to deal with it.

I am a current senior in high school, trying to set up a AFA program/club at my private school. My step mother owned a personal care home, which is basically a lesser of a nursing home, while many there were in their beginning stages of Alzheimer's I realized that there is so much more that could be done to raise awareness. I wasn't until a few months ago I found this site, while searching for college scholarships. If anybody has any ideas on how to add it to my school, please let me know.

I am 35 years old and I lost my mother to alzheimer's disease when I was 26. My mother was 63 years old when she passed away. I was in middle school when family members began to notice things change with my mom. I have wanted to help someone in a similar situation so they know that they are not alone. If there is someone out there that is losing a parent to this disease. I would love to be a sounding board. I wasn't even aware that there was a website for teens regarding Alzheimer's. I wish I had had it when I was going through my living nightmare of pain and loss. I hope to hear from someone soon.
